Drave Mauvais Sort – Review

Drave Mauvais Sort – Chronique

Well, buddy, if you haven’t listened to Mauvais Sort by Drave, released on December 31, 2024 via Les Productions Hérétiques, you’ve seriously missed out! Monarque, the mastermind behind the project, drags us into his dark world like a cellar in the dead of winter. No need to introduce Forteresse; they’ve been blazing the trail of Québécois black metal for ages, and now Monarque takes the reins with all his guts and talent.

Right from Monté de la terre, you’re swept away on a journey that rustles you like the wind across the long-cleared lands of old. The riffs hit you square in the face like a shovel on ice, and Monarque’s screams make you feel every rock, tree, and stream of our homeland. The touches of violin and spoons add a rustic flavor, smelling of wood, campfires, and grandfather’s tales. As they used to say back in the day: “It grabs you right in the chest, no joke!”

The track Mauvais Sort is more melancholic, but it hits like a wild horse charging through the hay. You can feel the soul of Québec, the weight of history, and the harshness of the seasons. This isn’t just music—it’s lived experience, the memory of our ancestors who plowed, cleared, and loved these lands.

In short, Mauvais Sort isn’t just an album: it’s a saga, a journey through the darkness and wind of our lands. Monarque proves that Québécois black metal still has bite, and that there are musicians who can tell their story without holding back. As they used to say in the village: “It hits like a snowstorm, and you’re wanting more!”
